I'm John Mylchreest: a software and DevOps engineer, a sometime technology leader, and a person who has always been quietly terrible at writing his ideas down. This site is me finally doing something about that.
It's not much, and that's deliberate. A place to share the things I couldn't find a straight answer to online, or worked out the hard way, on the off chance they spare someone else the same afternoon. Nothing significant, nothing professionally focused, no thought-leadership. Just a presence.
If a post solves your problem, or nudges you to do a thing differently, or pulls you into one of the projects I go on about here, that is the entire return on the exercise. Anything past that is a bonus I hadn't budgeted for.
Leveraging technology with purpose.
That one I mean without a flicker of irony, which on this page makes it the exception. It means I don't reach for a technical solution because the technology is interesting, or because building it is the part I enjoy. I reach for it when it's genuinely the right answer and it earns its keep. The harder discipline is noticing when the thing in front of me isn't a technology problem at all, and from someone whose reflex is that technology solves everything, that's a bigger concession than it sounds.
What you'll actually find here: debugging war stories, homelab experiments, notes on Rust and Go, the occasional foray into AI tooling, and whatever hardware I've taken apart this week and possibly even reassembled. Some posts are proper investigations with diagrams and regrets; others are three paragraphs of "this bit me, here's the fix". No theme, no schedule, no content calendar, just whatever's in front of me and worth keeping.
